Meet Jason Norris, General Manager of ARS®/Rescue Rooter® of Columbus

Tell us a little about yourself.
I started with ARS®/Rescue Rooter® in April of 1995 as a drain cleaning service technician. I worked my way through, going from a Trainer, to Supervisor, to Assistant Manager. I transferred to Indianapolis to manage the Rescue Rooter® service center. I attended and graduated a four year apprentice program, and am now a licensed plumber in both Indiana and Ohio.
What is the nicest thing someone has said to you after you fixed his or her plumbing problem?
I had a customer that was having their sewer cleaned every six months. Our company was called and offered a free camera with the service. The sewer had heavy root infiltration so we offered to replace it. The home owner did have the sewer replaced and call me back after two years and thanked me for taking care of the problem and not just putting a band-aid on it.
What part of your job gives you the most satisfaction?
Teaching people a trade and serving the community.
What is the most common plumbing problem you've encountered?
Water leaks from older plumbing systems.
Is there a particular tool your rely on more than others at work?
The inspection camera has become the best tool for accurate diagnosis.
If you could take a guess, how many homes have you visited on plumbing calls in your career?
I personally would guess that I have been in about 10,000 homes.
Do you have a personal anecdote you would like to share about your profession?
I was called to a retirement village that was having problems with hot water. The problem was that the water in the building was not hot. The owners paid a mechanical company to install a new heater two weeks before I was called and felt that they had bought a bad heater. After double checking the heater I started to inspect the building's plumbing system. I found that every plumbing fixture past the kitchen was not receiving hot water. My investigations lead me to discover that the cold water was pushing into the hot water supply system through the pre-rinse sprayer faucet. I was able to install two small check valves under the sink and solve the problem.
